We Gather as People of Faith

Welcome

Good morning, and welcome to worship. I’m Irma Nadeau, a LLWL with the Prairie to Pine region. Thank you for this opportunity to be in worship with you this morning.  A warm welcome those gathered here in person and those joining us online. Today is All Saints Day, a day when the church remembers with gratitude those whose lives have helped shape our faith and our lives. A look into Revelation gives us a picture of the multitudes who have gone before us.

Along with the scripture from Revelation we will look at The Beatitudes. Let us wonder where God’s blessing is already present and how we might be a blessing for others.

We come together in worship.

Lighting the Christ Candle

We light the Christ candle as a reminder that the light of Christ is present among us. As we remember those who have gone before us, may this light remind us that God’s love continues to shine in every generation.

Please join in the singing of the Hymn: “For All the Saints” (Voices United #705)

For all the saints, who from their labours rest,
All who by faith before the world confessed,
Your name, O Jesus, be forever blest.
Hallelujah, hallelujah!

You were their rock, their fortress, and their might:
You were their captain in the well-fought fight;
You, in the darkness drear, their one true light.
Hallelujah, hallelujah!

O blest communion, fellowship divine!
We feebly struggle, they in glory shine;
Yet all are one within your great design.
Hallelujah, hallelujah!

The golden evening brightens in the west,
Soon, soon to faithful warriors comes their rest;
Sweet is the calm of paradise the blest.
Hallelujah, hallelujah!

But lo! there breaks a yet more glorious day
The saints triumphant rise in bright array:
As God to glory calls them all away.
Hallelujah, hallelujah!

From earth’s wide bounds, from ocean’s farthest coast,
Through gates of pearl streams in the countless host,
Singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost:
Hallelujah, hallelujah!

Call to Worship

One:   Come, saints of God, and remember the saints who have gone before us.
All:      We give thanks for lives that have reflected God’s love.

One:   Come, all who hunger and thirst for righteousness.
All:      We come seeking God’s justice and mercy.

One:   Come, for God gathers people from every nation and every language.
All:      We belong to one another in the love of Christ.

One:   Let us worship God.

Prayer of Confession and Words of Assurance

Merciful God, we come before you as we are. We confess that we do not always recognize your blessing. When times are good we may become complacent. When we go through challenges, we may turn away from you, not trusting that you are there with us. Forgive us when we fail to notice those who are grieving, lonely or pushed aside, when we choose comfort over courage, when we have not loved our neighbour as ourselves.

We turn our hearts to you, O God as we seek forgiveness. Open our eyes to the people around us. As we receive your mercy and grace help us to extend that mercy and grace to others. Amen.

Hear the good news: in Christ we are loved and held in God’s mercy, grace, forgiveness and love.  Let us receive God’s grace with thankful hearts

Thanks be to God.

Sung Response – “Grant To Us Your Peace” (Voices United #955)

Grant to us your peace on earth,
Grant to us your peace, O God.

Scripture Readings

The first scripture reading is from Revelation 7:9-17

9 After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. 10 And they cried out in a loud voice:

“Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.”

11 All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying:

“Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!”

13 Then one of the elders asked me, “These in white robes—who are they, and where did they come from?”

14 I answered, “Sir, you know.”

And he said, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 Therefore,

“they are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence. 16 ‘Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat down on them,’ nor any scorching heat. 17 For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; ‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’ ‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’”

The second reading is from the Gospel of Matthew 5:1-12

1 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.

He said: 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

May God speak to us through these readings of scripture.
Thanks be to God!

Reflection

We Respond to God’s Word

Please join in the singing of the hymn – “Blest are They” (Voices United #896)

Blest are they, the poor in Spirit
Theirs is the kingdom of God
Blest are they, full of sorrow
They shall be consoled

Rejoice and be glad
Blessed are you, holy are you
Rejoice and be glad
Yours is the kingdom of God

Blest are they, the lowly ones
They shall inherit the Earth
Blest are they, who hunger and thirst
They shall have their fill

Rejoice and be glad
Blessed are you, holy are you
Rejoice and be glad
Yours is the kingdom of God

Blest are they, who show mercy
Mercy shall be theirs
Blest are they, the pure of heart
They shall see God

Rejoice and be glad
Blessed are you, holy are you
Rejoice and be glad
Yours is the kingdom of God

Blest are they, who seek peace
They are the children of God
Blest are they who suffer in faith
The glory of God is theirs

Rejoice and be glad
Blessed are you, holy are you
Rejoice and be glad
Yours is the kingdom of God

Blest are you, who suffer hate
All because of me
Rejoice and be glad, yours is the kingdom
Shine for all to see

Rejoice and be glad
Blessed are you, holy are you
Rejoice and be glad
Yours is the kingdom of God

God, of healing…
All: For your faithfulness and blessings, we give you thanks, O God.

God of all generations…
All: For your faithfulness and blessings, we give thanks, O God.

One:   Gather us, with the great multitude, into the hope of your kingdom. Until that day, make us faithful in love and generous in mercy.

All:      And, also with you.

The Prayer that Jesus Taught

One: Please join me in praying the prayer Jesus taught us to pray: Our Creator who is like Our Mother and…
All:    Our Father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Postlude “Song for Laura”

Laura Steidl, we adore you
Full of laughter, full of songs
Music flows like flowers before you
Rising up like a new Dawn.
You have led us every Sunday
Always keeping us in tune
Music is not all you’ve done here
There is so much more to you.

We all thank you for your work here
All your thoughtfulness and time.
Building beds and worship set up
You have been so very kind.
You have filled us with great music
Every Sunday faithfully
You will always be loved here
And welcomed you will be.

Now you have some time to travel
Time for rest and gardening.
Smelling flowers, watching birds fly
Loving friends and family
We will miss your weekly stories
And your leadership here
At Windsor Park United
Thoughts of you are fond and dear.
