Third Sunday after Pentecost / Father’s Day

Approach

Lighting the Christ Candle

Holy God, you speak to us in so many ways: in the gentle whisper in the shallows of the dawn or the deep of night, and in the roar of the rapids or the street rally of the righteous. Speak to us today in ways we may understand: through song and pray and word, gathered here as one and many, the quiet and the chatty, all of us challenged and changed by your Spirit. As we light this candle today, we ask that we feel your presence through our time together. Amen.

Response

Jesus, be the centre,
Be my source, be my light, Jesus.

Jesus, be the centre,
Be my hope, be my song, Jesus.

Be the fire in my heart,
Be the wind in these sails,
Be the reason that I live, Jesus, Jesus.

Jesus, be my vision
Be my path, be my guide, Jesus.

Be the fire in my heart,
Be the wind in these sails,
Be the reason that I live, Jesus, Jesus.

Be the fire in my heart,
Be the wind in these sails,
Be the reason that I live, Jesus, Jesus.

Jesus, be the centre,
Be my source, by my light, Jesus.
Be my source, be my light, Jesus.
Jesus, Jesus.

Call to Worship

One:   Praise God from the heaven, give praise in the heights! Give praise, all you angels, praise God, all you hosts!
All:      Praise God, sun and moon, give praise, stars and lights! Praise God, farthest heavens, and all waters beyond heaven!

One:   Let all things praise the Holy One at whose command they were created, who established them for all time, setting bounds, which cannot be passed.
All:      Praise God from the earth, great sea creatures and ocean depths, lightning and hail, snow and frost, gales that obey God’s decree.

One:   All mountains and hills, all fruit trees and cedars, wild animals and cattle, creatures winged and earth-bound,
All:      Sovereigns who rule earth and its people, all who govern and judge this world, young men and women alike, old people and children together.

One:   Let all things praise the name of God, the name above every other, whose splendour covers heaven and earth. You give strength to your people, songs of praise to your faithful.
All:      Let the whole creation cry, “Glory be to God on high.”

(Psalm 148)

Hymn – “How Great Thou Art”

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the works Thy hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!

When through the woods, and forest glades I wander,
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees.
When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur
And hear the brook, and feel the gentle breeze.

Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!

But when I think, that God, His Son not sparing;
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in,
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin.

Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration
And there proclaim, “My God, how great thou art!”

Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!

Opening Prayer

Spirit of Life, Breath of God, wind that moves over the earth, we are humbled by your presence and power. We are here this morning to take you in and experience the transforming ways of your love, to rest a little while and sing and pray and be in sacred fellowship with one another. If we arrive here empty, may we leave filled. If we arrive here lonely, may we leave uplifted. If we arrive here anxious, may we leave knowing peace. May we be a blessed and blessing people today and every day. Amen.

Hymn – “Lord, Prepare Me”

Lord, prepare me to be a sanctuary
Pure and holy, tried and true
With thanksgiving, I’ll be a living
Sanctuary for you.

The Word

Scripture Reading:           Psalm 105:1-5

1 Give thanks to the Lord and proclaim his greatness.  Let the whole world know what he has done. 2 Sing to him; yes, sing his praises.  Tell everyone about his wonderful deeds. 3 Exult in his holy name; rejoice, you who worship the Lord. 4 Search for the Lord and for his strength; continually seek him. 5 Remember the wonders he has performed, his miracles, and the rulings he has given,

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church.
Thanks be to God!

Hymn – “Ancient Words”

Holy words long preserved for our walk in this world;
They resound with God’s own heart,
O, let the ancient words impart;
Words of life, words of hope,
Give us strength, help us cope;
In this world where’er we roam,
Ancient words will guide us home.

Ancient words, ever true, change me, and changing you;
We have come with open hearts,
O let the ancient words impart.

Holy words of our faith
Handed down to this age
Came to us through sacrifice
O heed the faithful words of Christ.

Ancient words, ever true, change me, and changing you;
We have come with open hearts,
O let the ancient words impart.

Holy words long preserved
For our walk in this world
They resound with God’s own heart
O let the ancient words impart.

Ancient words, ever true, change me, and changing you;
We have come with open hearts,
O let the ancient words impart.

Hymn – “She Walked in the Summer”

She walked in the summer through the heat on the hill.
She hurried as one who went with a will.
She danced in the sunlight when the day was done.
Her heart knew no evening who carried the sun.

Fresh as a flower at the first ray of dawn,
She came to her cousin whose morning was gone.
There leaped a little child in the ancient womb,
And there leaped a little hope in every ancient tomb.

Hail, little sister, who hearlds the spring.
Hail, brave mother, of whom prophets sing.
Hail to the moment beneath your breast.
May all generations call you blessed.

When you walk in the summer through the heat on the hill,
When you’re wound with the wind and one with Her will,
Be brave with the burden you are blessed to bear,
For it’s Christ that you carry everywhere, everywhere, everywhere.

Hymn – “In the Garden”

I come to the garden alone while the dew is still on the roses;
And the voice I hear falling on my ear, the Son of God discloses.
And He walks with me, and He talks with me, and He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever know.

He speaks, and the sound of His voice is so sweet, the birds hush their singing;
And the melody that He gave to me within my heart is ringing.
And He walks with me, and He talks with me, and He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known.

I’d stay in the garden with Him though the night around me is falling.
But He bids me go; through the voice of woe, His voice to me is calling.
And He walks with me, and He talks with me, and He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever know.

The Response

Prayers of the People

One:   God, thank you for the music all around us. Each morning we hear it from the moment we open our ears; the low notes of wind around the eaves, the whoosh of water as it comes from the tap, the throaty whistle of the boiling kettle, the metallic tap of the spoon against the cup, the jazz percussion of our feet on the steps. The sounds of our day, so familiar we hardly pay attention. Thank you for the ability to hear.

One:   Thank you for the sounds of life: the chatter of the squirrel, the deep purr of a cat, the sharp calls of a blue jay, the sound of someone we love laughing. Give us wisdom to enter this day with good sounds, tones and pitches and words that affirm, encourage, cherish, our sounds affecting the world in a positive way.

One:   We pray for all we sing a sad song today; the grieving, the lonely, the lost. We pray for those who have los their voice and feel silenced or oppressed. We especially pray for those in our community…May they feel your presence with them today and every day.

One:   There are many singing freedom songs around our world, and so today we pray for the safety of these singers. Give their song the strength to convince and convert, the power to ward off war. There are too many war songs, we don’t want to hear another one.

One:   Thank you for your songs, love songs, which we are invited to sing. Thank you for all the parts you’ve made for the song; melodies to inspire our hearts and harmonies that reach into our souls.

One:   God, You are the Great Composer. We long to be composed each day in your image, singing your elegant score truly, clearly, following your rhythm by heart, finding our voice in your beautiful world. Hearing you in the music of life.

One:   So, we join our voices together as we pray in the words that Jesus taught us.
All:      Our Father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Hymn – “There is No One Like Jesus”

O there is no one like my Jesus,
O there is no one like my Jesus,
O there is no one like my Jesus,
Forever and ever it will be! Sing halleluia!

I’ve walked around and there’s none like Him.
I’ve searched around and there’s none like Him.
I’ve gone around and there’s none like Him.
Forever and ever it will be! Sine halleluia!

Benediction

Your love, O God, is a wonderful love, a welcoming love, an embracing love, a love wonderful beyond the telling of it. As we leave this time of worship, may that love we experience in you be reflected in our living day by day, as we work for peace and justice for all your people. May our hearts continue to sing your songs as we move into the world. Amen.
