Call to Worship

One:    We are gathered here on the first Sunday of Lent.
All:      It is a season of mystery.
One:    It marks the time of Jesus’ journey in the wilderness.
All:      Can we go with him on this journey?
One:    Yes. Jesus invites us on this journey to discover more about ourselves, to discover more about his way, and to discover the kingdom of Heaven.
All:      Come, let us go with Jesus on this journey.

Prayer of Approach and Confession

Gracious God, this Lenten Journey seems so long at times, and we become impatient. We want to ask “Are we there yet?” and fast-forward to the joy of Easter. But we know the destination brings horror first—and then hope. Loving God, strengthen us for the days ahead as we walk with Jesus toward Jerusalem and the cross, toward his dying and his promise of a new life. May we find the blessing in this journey, but as we begin our Lenten journey, O God, we must come to terms with the times when we did not trust, when we did not act according to our faith, when we followed other paths that took us away from you. Bless us and forgive us, and show us the way forward as we seek to walk with Jesus. Amen.   (adapted from Susan Ivaney. Gathering, Lent/Easter 2019, pages 31, 32. Used with permission)
