Lighting the Christ Candle

Today we remember and honour the lies of those who have passed on to eternal life. We light the Christ Candle this morning especially to remember the everyday saints who brought light into our lives in the miraculous way the every day saints do…willingly and abundantly sharing the love and light of Christ with stranger, neighbour, and family member alike.

Call to Worship

One:   Let us gather to remember.
All:      All those throughout history who have shown us the way to live and love as Jesus did. And let us remember all those that were lost and scared alone and searching. Knowing that we are all perfectly human and completely imperfect. We hold all in love.

One:   Let us gather to remember.
All:      All the saints of ages past and those in our own time who loved us. And let us remember even those who failed to love us as we needed. Let us honour those that have acted fearless in times of challenge and showed us how to walk on the journey of life with courage. And humbly forgive those that tried as hard as they were able despite all their failed efforts. We cherish all as sacred children of God.

One:   Let us gather to remember.
All:      The love of God, inspired by Holy Wisdom poured out for all of us in the warm embrace of the risen Christ for sinner and saint alike. Let us give thanks and together worship God, singing praises, and praying for hope and courage in this ever changing world without end. Amen.

Hymn – “Eternal, Unchanging, We Sing” (Voices United #223)

Eternal, Unchanging, we sing to your praise:
Your mercies are endless, and righteous your ways;
Your servants proclaim the renown of your name
Who rules over all and is ever the same.

Again we rejoice in the world you have made,
Your mighty creation in beauty arrayed,
We thank you for life, and we praise you for joy,
For love and for hope that no power can destroy.

We praise you for Jesus, our Master and Lord,
The might of his Spirit, the truth of his word,
His comfort in sorrow, his patience in pain,
The faith sure and steadfast that Jesus shall reign.

Prayer of Approach and Confession

Oh Loving God, we come to you to immerse ourselves in your holy word being born anew among this community of believers. We seek your renewing transformative spirit in the word, through son and prayers shared among us. We remember all those in our lives who have, imperfect as we are, shown us how to live more authentical lives as followers of the Jesus way. We recognize that at times we fail to commit ourselves to you and turn away when in despair. We know that we need your grace to be fully alive and full present to whatever you call us too, that we may be instruments of transformation for this broken and blessed world.

Words of Assurance

With wisdom we seek out the examples of the saints that have gone before us. God see us even when we are blind and unable to manifest the gifts of life offered to us. With our imperfections God’s arms are always wide open inviting us to an everlasting relationship. So that we maybe witnesses and advocates of God’s peace and justice, love and mercy for others.

Sung Response – “Come and Fill Our Hearts” (Move Voices #16)

Come and fill our hearts with your peace.
You alone, O Lord, are holy.
Come and fill our hearts with your peace,
Alleluia

Hymn “Those Hearts that We have Treasured” (Voices United #494)

Those hearts that we have treasured, those lives that we have shared;
Those loves that walked beside us, those friends for whom we’ve cared,
Their blessing rests upon us, their life is memory,
Their suffering is over, their spirits are set free.

They still give hope and comfort, they did not lose the fight;
They showed us truth and goodness, they shine into our night.
Remember days of gladness; remember times of joy;
Remember all the moments that grief cannot destroy.

From hearts that we have treasured, from lives that we have shared,
From loves that walked beside us, from friends for whom we’ve cared,
We’ve learned to treasure kindness, we’ve learned that grace provides,
We’ve learned to be together, we’ve learned that love abides.

All Our Saints

Witnesses of God in human form.

May you walk in the comfort of God’s care.

We Hear God’s Word

Scripture Reading: Habakkuk 1:1-4; 2:1-4

1 The prophecy that Habakkuk the prophet received.

2 How long, Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen? Or cry out to you, “Violence!” but you do not save? 3 Why do you make me look at injustice? Why do you tolerate wrongdoing? Destruction and violence are before me;  there is strife, and conflict abounds. 4 Therefore the law is paralyzed, and justice never prevails. The wicked hem in the righteous, so that justice is perverted.

1 I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts; I will look to see what he will say to me, and what answer I am to give to this complaint. 2 Then the Lord replied: “Write down the revelation  and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it. 3 For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; It will certainly come and will not delay. 4 See, the enemy is puffed up; his desires are not upright—but the righteous person will live by his faithfulness

Gospel Reading:     Luke 19:1-10

1 Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.

5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.

7 All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”

8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”

9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

May God speak to us through these readings of scripture.
Thanks be to God!

Sermon “When We are Found, the Community is Restored”

Hymn “For the Faithful Who have Answered” (VU #707)

For the faithful who have answered when they heard your call to serve,
For the many ways you led them testing will and stretching nerve,
For their work and for their witness as they strove against the odds,
For their courage and obedience we give thanks and praise, O God.

Many eyes have glimpsed the promise, many hearts have yearned to see.
Many ears have heard you calling us to greater liberty.
Some have fallen in the struggle, others still are fighting are fighting on.
You are not ashamed to own us. We give thanks and praise, O God.

For this cloud of faithful witness, for the common life we share,
For the work of peace and justice, for the gospel that we bear,
For the vision that our homeland is your love—deep, high and broad—
For the different roads we travel we give thanks and praise, O God.

Prayers of the People

Passing of the Peace

The Prayer Jesus Taught Us:

One:   Please join me in praying as Jesus taught us: Our Creator who is like
All:      Our Mother and our Father, who are in heaven, Hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For yours is the kingdom, the power and the glory, now ever and forever. Amen.

We Go Into God’s World

Hymn“Amazing Grace” (Voices United #266)

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was Blind, but now I see.

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believe!

Through many dangers, toils, and snares,
I have already come;
‘Tis grace that brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me,
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be
As long as life endures.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’d first begun.
