Trinity Sunday

We Gather as a People of Faith

Welcome

Lighting the Christ Candle

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning — the first day.

Call to Worship

One:   Come with your questions, come with your awe!
All:      For the God who broods over the chaos meets us in this place.

One:   Come with your energy, come with your weariness!
All:      For the God who breathes new life into the dust meets us in this place.

One:   Come with your sadness, come with your joy!
All:      For the God who dared to become human meets us in this place

Please join in the singing of the hymn “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty“ (Voices United #315)

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning my song shall rise to Thee.
Holy, holy, holy!  Merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy!  All the saints adore Thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee,
Which wert, and art, and evermore shall be.

Holy, holy, holy!  Though the darkness hide Thee,
Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see.
Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee.
Perfect in power, in love, in purity.

Holy, holy, holy!  Lord God Almighty!
All Thy works shall praise Thy name in earth, and sky, and sea.
Holy, holy, holy!  Merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

Prayer of Approach and Confession:

Holy triune God, we confess that we have not lived for your glory. You came to love and save the world, but we condemn others in your name. You send us out to tell good news, but we hide from our calling in fear. Forgive us, God of grace. Give us new life in your Spirit so that we may serve you faithfully and live as your beloved children; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Words of Assurance:

Believe the Good News: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven!

Sung Response – “Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow” (Voices United #541)

Praise God from whom all blessings flow,
Praise God, all creatures high and low,
Give thanks to God in love made known,
Creator, Word and Spirit One.

Please join in the singing of the hymn – “Jesus, Stand Among Us” (Voices United #396)

Jesus, stand among us in your risen power;
Let this time of worship be a hallowed hour.

Breathe the Holy Spirit into every heart;
Bid the fears and sorrows from each soul depart.

Lead our hearts to wisdom till our doubting cease,
And to all assembled speak you word of peace.

We Hear God’s Word

Scripture Reading:

The scripture reading is from Genesis 1:1-2:4a

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

6 And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” 7 So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. 8 God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.

9 And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good.

11 Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.

14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. 16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.

20 And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.” 21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.” 23 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.

24 And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind  n our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.

31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.

2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

May God speak to us through these readings of scripture.
Thanks be to God!

Bedding Dedication

May God’s grace be upon this bedding…warming, comforting, enfolding, and embracing. May these sheets, pillows, quilts be a safe haven, a sacred place of security and well-being, sustaining and embracing in good times as well as difficult ones. May those who receive these be cradled in hope, kept in joy, graced with peace, and wrapped in love. Amen.

Sung Response – “God, You Wrap Your Love” (tune Voices United #664)

God, you wrap your love around us like a blanket, soft and warm.
You give rest when we are weary. You protect us from the storm.
May the children who find shelter in these blankets that we share
Also feel the joy and comfort of your love’s protecting care.

Anthem – “Hallelujah is Our Song”

What hope we have
Even in the longest night
For the light will overcome
We will not fear
For we know the sun will rise
Hallelujah is our song

What peace we have
Even in this wounded world
Where the battle rages on
We will not fear
For we know who heals our souls
Hallelujah is our song

Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
He is risen over all
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah is our song

What joy we have
For the stone is rolled away
And the tomb holds nothing now
No sting of death
No power over sin or grave
Hallelujah is our song

Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
He is risen over all
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah is our song

What hope we have
Even in the longest night
For the light will overcome
And we shall live
Sinners we will rise to saints
Hallelujah is our song

Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
He is risen over all
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah is our song

Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
He is risen over all
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah is our song

Prayers of the People

Invitation to Passing of the Peace

Please offer one another the peace of Christ in a way that you feel comfortable and respects others’ space.

The Prayer that Jesus Taught

One:   Please join me in praying the prayer Jesus taught us to pray: Our Creator who is like…
All:      Our Mother and Our Father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

We Go Into God’s World

Please join in the singing of the hymn“Go to the World” (Voices United #420)

Go to the world! Go into all the earth.
Go preach the cross where Christ renews life’s worth,
Baptizing, as the sign of our rebirth.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

Go to the world! Go into every place.
Go live the Word of God’s redeeming grace.
Go seek God’s presence in each time and space.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

Go to the world! Go struggle, bless and pray;
The nights of tears give way to joyous day.
As servant Church, you follow Christ’s own way.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

Go to the world! Go as the ones I send,
For I am with you ‘til the age shall end;
When all the hosts of glory cry “Amen!”
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

Commissioning

God, who created you in the divine image, sends you forth: we go, to reflect the presence of our Creator to everyone we meet.

Jesus, who has redeemed you, has established the reign of God in our midst: we go, to bring healing to the broken of the world.

The Holy Spirit, who calls you to be God’s people, goes with you to many places: we go,

to tear down the walls that divide us, and to build lives of hope for all of God’s children.

Benediction

And now, may the peace of the rolling waves, the peace of the silent mountains, the peace of the singing stars, and the deep, deep peace of the Prince of Peace, be with you now and forever. Amen.

The Christ Candle is extinguished.

Sung Response“May the Grace of Christ Attend Us”  (VU #963)

May the grace of Christ attend us,
And the love of God surround us,
And the Holy Spirit keep us
Now and ever. Amen.
