JAMES EVERETT (EV) SMALLWOOD Ev Smallwood passed peacefully on December 27, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 58 years, Helen (Rodgers) and his big sister, Jeanie McLean. Ev will live forever in the hearts of his children, Wray (Sandra), Scott (Susan), Donna Purvis (Wayne), Catherine, and Boni Carbotte; grandsons Andrew and Stephen Smallwood, Kevin and Ryan Carbotte and their father Dan; and in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews across Canada. Ev was born in Moose Jaw, SK, on June 30, 1926. He began his career at Moose Jaw's CHAB radio before serving in the Canadian Army Public Relations Corps during the Second World War. In 1947, he accepted a job at CFAR radio in Flin Flon, MB, where he met and fell deeply in love with Helen. They married in 1949, and had five children, all born in Flin Flon. In 1964, Ev brought his family to Winnipeg and began a career in public service for the federal government. He retired in 1990 as Regional Manager of Public Affairs for Employment and Immigration Canada. Ev was a kind and loving family man, especially proud of his four grandsons. He was also a second father to Maureen Daun (Burke), a role important to him for more than 50 years. In retirement, Ev's passions were horticulture and genealogy, delving into his and Helen's ancestry to document his findings for future generations. He took pleasure in recreational photography and audiovisual equipment, and adored his Mac' and the internet for being his gateway to boundless information and lifelong learning. Ev's family is grateful to the caring and supportive staff of 3 East, Riverview Health Centre. Donations in Ev's memory may be made to Hospice Palliative Care Manitoba, 2109 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, R3J 0L3. Family and friends are welcome to attend a celebration of Ev's life on February 1, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. in Windsor Park United Church, 1062 Autumnwood Drive in Winnipeg.
