DAVID CHEE YEE KAAN (Kaan Chee Yee) On Friday, April 21, 2006, David Kaan passed away at the age of 73. David was born on July 27, 1932 in Hong Kong, the seventeenth of eighteen children. He attended Lingnan School and Diocesan Boys School in Hong Kong, where he made lifelong friends. After immigrating to Canada in 1952 David began his studies in science at United College, then obtained a degree in medicine at the University of Manitoba, finally completing his residency in Anaesthesia. In 1962 he met his future wife June (Buckley) while both were working at the Manitoba Sanatorium in Ninette, and they married in 1964. After graduating, he worked at St. Boniface General Hospital, and later at Misericordia and Concordia Hospitals until cancer halted his career. He excelled in both regional and pediatric anaesthesia, and his unique talents were sorely missed. Fortunately for his family, a prognosis of mere days was extended into twenty years of a rich and varied retirement, and he lived to see his children graduate from university, marry, and produce four grandchildren. He died quietly at the Grace Hospice surrounded by his loving family. David was a man of great faith who contributed enormously to the life of Windsor Park United Church for four decades through his volunteerism and love of music. He expressed himself through his love for family, his calligraphy, music, and storytelling. He delighted in everything from boyish pranks to serene literature, and he loved good eating even more than he counselled moderation. Above all things, he venerated the life that had been given to him and the opportunity to see his family thrive. David is survived by June, his wife of nearly 42 years; his daughter Diana (Sheung Ming) and son Michael (Sheung Mun), his son-in-law Leonard Stern, grandson Avram Stern, and granddaughter Sarah Stern, of Ottawa; and his daughter-in-law Rozelle Srichandra, granddaughter Maeve Kaan, and five-week-old grandson Graham Kaan, of Winnipeg. He is also survived by many of his siblings and their children from around the world. The family wishes to thank the staff of Victoria General Hospital and the Grace Hospice for their kindness. A memorial service will take place on Thursday, April 27 at 11:00 a.m. at Windsor Park United Church, 1062 Autumnwood Drive. If friends wish, donations may be made to Windsor Park United Church towards the creation of a stained glass window in David's memory. The Coutu family in care of arrangements: E. J. COUTU CO.
